Die EHEC-Darminfektionen in Deutschland sind auf den Verzehr von Sprossen zurückzuführen. Der Bio-Betrieb aus Bienenbüttel gilt als “die Spinne im Netz”.

Die Gesundheitsbehörden gehen davon aus, dass Sprossen die Ursache für die EHEC-Epidemie sind. „Es sind die Sprossen“, sagte der Präsident des Robert-Koch-Instituts (RKI), Reinhard Burger.

Ein Nachweis des Darmkeims auf Sprossen sei aber noch nicht gelungen. Die Behörden begründen ihre Erkenntnis demnach mit Untersuchungen etwa in Restaurants, in denen EHEC-Erkrankte Sprossen gegessen hatten. Die Spuren führten zu einem Sprossen-Erzeuger in Niedersachsen.

Warnung für Tomaten, Gurken und Blattsalate aufgehoben

Burger hält es für möglich, dass die EHEC-Infektionsquelle bereits versiegt ist. Dies stehe aber noch nicht fest. Denkbar sei auch, dass die betroffenen Lebensmittel nur über einen bestimmten Zeitraum mit dem Bakterium in Kontakt gewesen seien. Es gebe noch Klärungsbedarf.

Jedoch sei es durch Überprüfung der Lieferwege möglich gewesen, die Sprossen als Quelle einzugrenzen. „Sie erwarten jetzt vielleicht, dass ich das verantwortliche Lebensmittel präsentiere mitsamt den anhaftenden Bakterien“, sagte Burger. „Damit können wir nicht dienen. Aber eine Eingrenzung ist möglich.“ Das Institut gab gemeinsam mit dem Bundesamt für Verbraucherschutz und dem Bundesamt für Risikobewertung am Freitag in Berlin bekannt, Bohnen-Sprossen seien definitiv als Ursache für die EHEC-Erkrankungen festgestellt worden.

China said on Friday that no case of E. coli (EHEC) has been reported in the country.

Deng Haihua, spokesman for the Ministry of Health, told a press conference that there was a relatively low risk of an outbreak of EHEC, a food-borne bacteria, since the country imports only a limited amount of fresh vegetables.

Peter Ben Embarek, food safety specialist with the World Health Organization (WHO), was quoted by Deng as saying that the possibility of being infected with EHEC in China was almost zero and Chinese public need not panic.

However Deng warned of the potential of infected people arriving in the country from Europe.

The ministry will keep in close contact with the WHO and concerned European nations to closely monitor the epidemic, said Deng.

Meanwhile, the ministry has urged related authorities to carry out meticulous surveillance and prevention measures, and ordered medical institutions at all levels to beef up monitoring of suspected EHEC cases and to report these cases promptly to the ministry.

EHEC is a virulent strain of gut bacterium that can result in stomach aches, diarrhea, and strokes. In extreme cases, it can result in coma or kidney failure.

EHEC has sickened more than 2,800 in Germany, the worst affected country.

Latest report say 97 others have fallen sick in 12 other European countries, as well as three in the United States.

A total of 27 people have died, with 26 in Germany and one in Sweden.

A 57-year-old man died of E. coli infection in Germany’s Frankfurt Thursday, pushing the death toll from the bacteria to 30.

The man had traveled with his wife to the city of Hamburg, an epicenter of the outbreak, Frankfurt authority said.

Another two deaths were reported in the state of Lower Saxony, including a 68-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, while more than 2,800 people in 14 countries have been infected since the deadly E. coli outbroke.

German researchers detected again the deadly strain o104 of E. coli on the scraps of cucumbers in a dustbin in the eastern city of Magdeburg in the state Saxony-Anhalt on Wednesday.

German health minister Daniel Bahr expressed his cautious hope for the disease on Wednesday as the number of new infection is clearly going down.

But he also admitted there will be new cases and more deaths have to be expected, as Germany’s national disease control centre, the Robert Koch Institute reported more than 300 infection in Germany on the same day.

The Robert Koch Institute also noticed the declining trend in new cases but it was not clear whether this was caused by people staying away from vegetables or the outbreak was truly waning.
