Tourist attraction: Scores of Libyans queued to see the corpses of Gaddafi and his son Mutassim in a freezer in a Misrata warehouse

The corpses of Muammar Gaddafi, his son Muatassim and a former aide have been moved from a commercial freezer in a Misrata warehouse in anticipation of burial, a security guard said.

Local military spokesman Ibrahim Beitalmal said the burial is likely to take place today.

The three men would be buried in unmarked graves in a secret desert location to avoid vandalism or the place becoming a shrine.

Asked about the removal of the bodies from the freezer, he said he was unaware of the process of burial getting under way.

However Salem al-Mohandes, a security guard at the warehouse complex, said the bodies were taken away late on Monday evening, where they had been on display for the past four days.

NAIROBI, Kenya — While Libya’s former rebels and many Western nations welcomed the end of the country’s long and brutal dictatorship, many sub-Saharan Africans are mourning the death of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, celebrated as much for his largesse as for his willingness to stand up to the West.

To them, his violent death was another sad chapter in a long-running narrative of Western powers meddling in Africa’s affairs.

“We are the 1 percent who are not celebrating,” said Salim Abdul, who helps run a major mosque in Uganda’s capital named for the former Libyan leader, who provided the money to build it.

Nato beendet Libyen-Einsatz bis Ende Oktober

Die Nato hat angekündigt, ihren Kriegseinsatz in Libyen noch in diesem Monat zu beenden. Mit dem Tod von Diktator Gaddafi ist das Ziel des Bündnisses erreicht.

Die Nato beendet bis zum 31. Oktober ihren Militäreinsatz in Libyen nach fast siebenmonatiger Dauer. Nato-Generalsekretär Anders Fogh Rasmussen sagte am Freitagabend in Brüssel, diese Entscheidung des Nato-Rates sei vorläufig, die endgültige Entscheidung werde in der kommenden Woche fallen.

Es war Gaddafis Libyen, das ganz Afrika seine erste Revolution in modernen Zeiten bescherte – die Vernetzung des gesamten Kontinents durch Telefon, Fernsehen, Rundfunk und verschiedene weitere technische Anwendungen wie etwa Telemedizin und Fernunterricht. Dank der WMAX-Plattform wurde über den ganzen Kontinent hinweg eine kostengünstige Verbindung möglich, die auch die ländlichen Gebiete einschloss.

Es begann 1992, als 45 afrikanische Länder RASCOM (Regional African Satellite Communication Organization – Organisation für die regionale afrikanische Satellitenkommunikation) gründeten, damit Afrika seinen eigenen Satelliten bekommen und die Kosten für die Kommunikation auf dem Kontinent gesenkt werden konnten. Das geschah in einer Zeit, in der Telefonate von und nach Afrika die teuersten der Welt waren aufgrund der jährlichen Kosten von US$ 500 Millionen, die Europa für die Benutzung seiner Satelliten wie z.B. Intelsat für Telefongspräche, einschließlich der Telefonate innerhalb des selben Landes, einsteckte.

Air traffic routes across North America and Europe - showing the 'hubs' that connect the world, such as London's Heathrow, JFK in New York and Frankfurt

Canadian anthropolgist Felix Pharand has devoted 13 years to creating diagrams of how human technologies such as data cables, aeroplanes and roads are colonising the surface of our planet.

Using an ordinary home PC, Pharand input data from agencies such as the Geospatial Intelligence Agency and Atmospheric Administration to create accurate illustrations of how humans have ‘domesticated’ our planet – superimposing the data on images of the earth’s cities lit up at night.

Pharand claims three per cent of the planet’s land surface is under tarmac – an area the size of India.
